Questions to ask the rescue

Even if you have already found a dog you feel a connection with, it is worth taking the time to understand how the rescue works and what you can expect from them.

You should feel comfortable asking questions, and a responsible rescue should be willing to have an open conversation with you.

About the dog

  • How long has the dog been in your care, and what do you know about their history?

  • Where is the dog currently living, and who has been caring for them?

  • What do you know about their health, including any previous illnesses, injuries or ongoing treatment?

  • How does the dog respond to unknown people?

  • How does the dog behave in the presence of other dogs?

  • Has the dog ever been observed in a home environment?

  • Has the dog ever been walked on-lead? How did they respond?

  • Has the dog ever travelled in the car?

  • Are there any situations the dog finds difficult, or aspects of their behaviour that remain unknown?

  • Why do you feel this particular dog would be suitable for my home and lifestyle?

About the adoption process

  • What does your adoption assessment involve?

  • Will I have the opportunity to speak with someone who knows the dog personally?

  • Can I meet the dog before making a commitment? If not, what information or videos can you provide?

  • What veterinary checks and treatments will be completed before adoption?

  • What paperwork will I receive, and when will ownership and microchip details be transferred?

  • If the dog is travelling from overseas, who is responsible for organising transport and ensuring the legal requirements are met?

About the rescue organisation and RBU

  • How long has your rescue organisation been established and how often do you re-home to the UK?

  • What happens if I experience difficulties after adoption?

  • Who can I contact if I have concerns about the dog's health or behaviour?

  • What does your rescue back up actually involve?

  • If I could no longer care for the dog, would you take them back or arrange a suitable alternative placement?

  • Do you have foster homes or other arrangements available in the UK if a dog needs to be returned?
